Gate Lodge On Mount Austin Road Became A Monument in 1995

When hiking up Mount Austin Road from the Tram Terminus at the bottom of Mount Austin Road you will pass Mount Austin Playground and then come across Gate Lodge, a Renaissance style building which was built between 1900 and 1902 and served as the keeper of Mountain Lodge's living quarters.

Declared as a monument in 1995, Gate Lodge makes an interesting diversion during your walk up Mount Austin Road as you explore the grounds of the lodge. A point to note is that the inside of Gate Lodge is closed to the public so you can't get inside but the grounds and outside of the building are open to the public.

Mountain Lodge was the former Governor of Hong Kong's summer house pre-World War II. In the late 1940s, the summer house was demolished due to damage it sustained during the war. The Mountain Lodge site on Mount Victoria in Hong Kong is now a viewing platform that has fantastic views to the west of Hong Kong Island from various vantage points that are connected via paved pathways.
