Views From The Pavilion at the top of Mount Austin Road

If you are looking for a great day out in Hong Kong then you could hike from the Tram Terminal at the bottom of Mount Austin Road to the old site of the former Governor of Hong Kong’s summer mansion, Mountain Lodge, along Mount Austin Road. This hiking route gets very steep so this hike isn’t for the light-hearted but the rewards of walking or hiking along this route are plentiful.

During your walk you will come across Mount Austin Playground, a wonderful family-friendly park that also has a fully equipped children’s play area. As you continue your walk along Mount Austin Road passed all the very expensive and sought after residences the road will get quite narrow in places. With this being a residential area you do need to be aware of any cars because Mount Austin Road has quite a few blind bends and the pavement is intermittent too. It is best to walk along the side of the road and stay safe.

At the top of Mount Austin Road, you will find Gate Lodge, which was the gatehouse for the former Governor’s summer residence. Built in Renaissance style, this is the last remaining building on the site of Mountain Lodge as the main residence was demolished in the 1940s. You can’t go inside Gate Lodge but you can explore the outside of the building.

As you continue up Mount Austin Road you will find the pavilion and viewing platform that now sits on the Mountain Lodge site as well as the beautifully manicured Victoria Peak Gardens.
